Over the 50 years of my life I've been cognizant of eating habits for 35 of them. I was fifteen when I first counted calories to lose weight. Over the course I've lost a number of pounds and gained more than I need--I'm not quite to the weight I want to sustain. Following is a list of behaviors that have developed over the years and since I am not done the list will be fluid.
1. 80 Calorie buns for sandwiches.
I found 80 calorie buns in the
store for hamburgers, etc and one day when I reached for the bread to make a sandwich I accidentally
pulled the buns and the thought was...Why not? I'm using up buns that I
would probably throw away and the they are thicker than two pieces of 35
calorie bread.
2. Honey Mustard (10) vs Mayonnaise (30)
I grew up on mayonnaise. One of my earliest memories is hiding behind the couch with the jar of mayonnaise eating it with a spoon like ice cream. I remember my mom finding me and telling me I was going to get sick but either didn't care or have the energy to get me out from behind the couch. Mayonnaise was slathered on all the sandwiches, the basis for most of the salads and the main ingredient in my mom's guacamole- which we called 'goop'. As an adult I still prefer the taste of mayonnaise over regular mustard but I have found I like the taste of honey mustard on my sandwiches/wraps. The difference in calories between the two is a third... 10 calories for a teaspoon for honey mustard and 30 calories for a teaspoon of mayonnaise. And...if you like regular mustard? 3 calories for a teaspoon.
3. Slice of cheese
I like cheese. I found this past year the 50 calorie slice cheese isn't so bad. At times I would make a sandwich with hoagie bread. Instead of using two pieces I would tear one piece up and distribute it throughout the length of the sandwich. Voila... no extra calories with the taste of cheese in every bite (or close to it)! :-)
