Point of View

"Begin with the end in mind."
--Stephen Covey

Truly.  Most times when I start (or re-start) this process of reshaping my body through proper nutrition and exercise I have a vague, fuzzy notion of the results.  I have a picture from my first 5K (from high school) which shows the results of a summer of running and eating nutritionally.  Do I think I can return to that stage?  Not really-not yet anyway.  I'm still in the first stages of an uphill trek and right now my knees hurt and the top of the mountain is shrouded in clouds.  All I know is that I want to see the view from the peak without really knowing what that looks like.  Today- aerobic-30 minutes-OUTSIDE-suburb with minimal hills.  Abs-25x2 leg lifts, 25 sit ups, 25 crunches.

Wants vs Needs

This picture caught my attention.  The title led me to read the words- some of which has already been relayed through a sibling.  I didn't believe him- or more accurately I didn't want to believe him.  I'm at the age that I like what I like and change doesn't come easily.  With that said, I also want to reach older age with minimal health issues.  What is one to do?  Keep erasing that wall and make those changes.  If not- you just might not get what you really, really want.  You just need to decide what that is.  Today-aerobic-treadmill @ Five Points Washington- 30 minutes; 13 min running; 17 walking.  8 pushups.

8 Dangers of Diet Soda

1. Neurotoxic

Made from L-aspartyl-L-phenylalanyl-methyl-ester, aspartame is 200 times as sweet as sugar and contains negligible calories. Once in the human body, aspartame breaks down into phenylalanine, aspartic acid, and methanol. Methanol is a wood alcohol poison that, when heated above 86 degrees Fahrenheit (the human body temperature is 98.6 degrees), converts to formaldehyde. Aspartame is also an excitotoxin that builds up in the brain, and can excite brain neurons to the point of cell death.

Can It Be Done......

I made a New Year's Resolution to give up soda-permanently.  I lasted less than twelve hours.  I am still in the slow process of giving it up.  Some days I drink less than normal while others I drink more than I should.  Two days ago I set a 'drinking' schedule to incorporate water into my diet.  The first day I was successful but no so much on the second.  At one point I thought of buying lemons to help make water easier to imbibe.  Ironically while I was perusing Pinterest today I came across the remainder of the post.  I haven't fully researched everything within this but at a certain level I agree with what is written.  I'll write more later when the switch from soda to water becomes permanent.  BTW- here's the water schedule (each glass is 8 oz) 1. 30 minutes after breakfast.  2. 30 minutes before working out.  3.  30 minutes after workout 4.  before lunch  5. with lunch 6. before dinner 7. with dinner  8.  @8 p.m.  Today-aerobic-treadmill.  30 minutes walking.  Ab work- 2x25 leg lifts. 2x 25 crunches while watching Lost Season1Ep 5.

5 Reasons To Drink Lemon Water
1.  It balances pH--Lemon is an acidic food, but once metabolized, it becomes alkaline.

2.  It keeps skin clear and glowing!   Hydration from drinking lemon water is great for moisturizing our skin from the inside out. Lemon also contains lots of Vitamin C, which helps with wrinkles and blemishes.

3. It kick starts the digestive system--a big glass of lemon water is a great way to start the day. It encourages the liver to produce bile which in turn aids in digestion. It increases urination which helps purify it. It also helps with heartburn and constipation.

4. It helps with weight loss--Keeping the body in an alkaline state helps people lose weight faster. Lemons are high in fiber pectin, which helps keep one full, longer. They also have a diuretic effect, which helps with water weight gain.

5 It helps control the coffee and soda pop habit--

Lemon Spritzers

Use 1/2 lemon, add ice to a 24 ounce mason jar, and add water to the top.

*Tip..use a straw to keep the acidic lemon off your teeth. (Remember, it is acidic until digested, then it turns alkaline)

I Did!

The weekend is here and this question is pertinent for today. Saturday-when the daily routine is non-existent.  I have to look at the schedule and make a concrete appointment to exercise.  If I don't, all else  creeps in, takes over and before I know it the day is over.  While I'm definitely not a "first thing in the morning" exerciser the chances of getting the job done goes down exponentially after lunch.  Why is that?  I don't know-but now that it has been said aloud-I realize the chances of success goes up if I exercise in a specific part of the day.  Today- aerobic- treadmill- walked 41 minutes, 2.05 minutes while I watched Lost- Season 1 Episode 4.

Examples All Around

Discipline and Regret.  Two words that may invoke distinct feelings.  Yesterday my seventy-three year old mother fell trying to navigate off a curb.  Most women her age would have had less trouble completing the simple task but years of physical activity as a younger woman combined with years of inactivity as an aging mother has left her with rigid joints.  She lacked the discipline to wait for help and instantly regretted her decision as she fell.  I came to the conclusion that I either go through the aches and pains of getting back into shape now or suffer the consequences as I get older.  For me the writing is on the wall and I've decided to erase and re-write.  Today- 30 minute aerobic- elliptical only; 7 pushups, 25 full sit ups, 25 leg lifts , 25 ab crunches.

Lost

Sometimes one can feel lost when there isn't a daily routine, but I'm actually referring to the t.v. show-Lost- that aired for a number of years.  I never watched it during that time but I did hear the hoopla surrounding the show.  I surfed Netflix looking for a show to watch as I exercised on the treadmill. I chose this one and watched the pilot during my run/walk today.  I'm hooked-so far.  In the past there are shows that I will faithfully watch for the first few years and then either my focus changes or the show does-and then I'll drop it like a hot potato.  Shows left-120.  I wonder how far I'll be able to run by then if I remain constant to my goal.  Today-30 minute aerobic only: treadmill- 12 running, 18 walking.

Pinterest

A few days ago a friend directed me towards the website www.Pinterest.com.  I am hooked and am not entirely sure why.  During my perusing I found a number of 'motivations' and decided to email them daily to a friend to help us both as we attempt to re-establish a healthy lifestyle.  Here's one from a few days ago (the day before my 43rd birthday)- the day I decided, yet again, to get into better shape.  Today is the day after my birthday, unofficially the first day of my new year! I'll end each post with the day's exercise accomplishments!  Thirty minutes aerobic (2 on the elliptical, 28 on the treadmill-running twelve at 5mph, walking the remainder), six pushups, 25 sit-ups.  What a departure from what I used  to accomplish.
